The turn of the weather doesn’t mean a slow down for us here at the Interior Design Shoppe. We’re rolling out of bed early-ish, sucking in our post-holiday turkey bellies and delving into that good ol’ inner-city design! One thing that we’re constantly sourcing for our fabulous city-dwelling clients is flexible seating options. Many small-space dwellers rely upon pieces to do double and even triple duty for adding extra seating to various rooms in their homes. Check out some of our go-to options…
1.Poufs
First, and most obvious, is the pouf. This little guy needs no introduction as he’s an option we’ve all come to know and love. The real appeal of the pouf is the small footprint- when he’s not in use you can simply tuck it out of sight under your coffee table. Use the pouf as a footrest or extra seating when in a pinch. It also works great in a child’s playroom as a cute little chair, or even add a tray to the top of a pouf in lieu of a little bedside table in the master bedroom.
2. The Slipper Chair
At first glance, the slipper chair doesn’t look like much in the way of flexibility. But look again, friends! Group a few of these bad boys together and, voila, you’ve got an adorable armless sofa! Move the pieces seamlessly around your living room to refresh the layout or accommodate guests. They are also a cool option for use as banquette seating at a square or rectangular dining table.
3. The Upholstered Ottoman
Ok, we are huuuuge fans of these. They perform so many amazing feats, truly an all-in-one seating solution! First trick? Tuck an upholstered ottoman up in front of your sofa in lieu of a chaise cushion and put your feet up! Doing some entertaining in the dining room, but need extra seating? Most sofa seat heights are level with dining chair seat heights so you can easily scoot your ottoman over to the table for your guest. Lastly, once that dinner party moves into the living room, you can use your ottoman as an extra seat in the corner of the room instead of committing to having a full time chair there.
Amazing, right? Those little bad boys are three pieces that no small space is complete without! Jonesing for more inner-city design tricks and treats?
